FIRE BRIGADESMEN.
PRESENTATION OF HONOURS. ADVOCACY OF A BOARD. Representatives of the city and suburban fire brigades and of brigades in other parts of the province attended the annual, smoke concert of the Mount Eden Volunteer Fire Brigade on Saturday evening. The Mayor of Mount Eden, Mr. T. McNab. presided. The toast of the United Fire BrigadesAssociation and the Auckland District United Fire Brigades' Association was proposed by Mr. R. J. Mills, chairman of the Fire Brigade Committee of the Mount Eden Borough Council. No local body service deserved more credit or assistance than the fire brigade, he said. As most of them knew, ho was an advocate of the formation of a fire board. It had been said that, this would be detrimental to the personnel of the brigada , and that they would be ruled by professional men. lie was convinced that this would not be sa and that a board would be better for the district and for the men-
Iu responding. Superintendent Anderson, of Rotorua, said the United Fire Brigades' Association had a membership of 133 brigades in all parts of New Zealand, representing more than 2000 men. Its objects were to foster the work of the brigades and bring it. up to a. h 1?" standard of efficiency, to reward long service aud valour, and to endeavour to see/ that plants and equipment were kept up to a high standard. After other toasts had been honoured the following honours were presented:— Superintendent Moore, 13 years' service medal; Fireman R. N. Honeycotxibe, W years' service medal: Fireman Massey, five years' service medal; Fneman W. Moore,jfive years' service medal; Fireman A. Borrie, three years' service certificate; Fireman G. Moore, three years' service certificate. A framed photograph of the late ' ' J. E. Williams, formerly superintendent and a member of the Mount Eden >' l eade for many years, was 1 the brigade on behalf ,of Mrs. Will" ami Superintendent Moore. , There was an excellent programme oi vocal and instrumental items, arrange the secretary,.
