Dr. and Mrs. Eric Luke have returned to Wellington from a visit to Rotorua. Miss B. Vaughan and Miss B. Newmarsh, of Rotorua, aro visiting Auckland. Mr. and Mrs. Gregory, of To Awamutu, are staying at Hotel Mon Des>ir, Takapuna. Mrs. R. T. Roid, of Hamilton, is visiting Auckland and is staying at Hotel (Jargen. Mrs. G. Louisson, of Palmerston North, is visiting Auckland and is staying at the Grand Hotel. Mrs. V. F. Boyle, who has been visiting her mother, Mrs. Howard Tripp, of Timaru, lias left for Auckland. Miss Madelaino Gorton, who has been the guest of Mrs. Greig, New Plymouth, will return to Auckland early this week. Miss Sheila Lvnskey, of Christchurch, has left 011 a visit to Auckland, where she will bo the guest of her sister, Mrs. Geoffrey Falck. Mrs. A. G. Waddell, Mrs. George Waddell and Miss Doris Waddell, of Hamilton, are visiting Auckland and aro staying at the Grand Hotel. Mrs. E. F. B. Waters, of Kowhai Terrace, Epsom, who has been visiting Wellington as the guest of Lady Beauchamp, will return to Auckland at the beginning of this week. The choice of home in preference to a career was made by Mrs. William Fleming, a scientist, recently. Two years ago Mrs. Fleming was engaged on intricate mathematical calculations and drawings for the Sydney Harbour Bridge, but to-day she is ,an industrious housewife, busy making her home in a flab in a South-west London suburb. Miss Mona Gordon, formerly of Auckland, paid a short visit to Sydney when en route to London. Her second novel will be published shortly, her earlier book, "Torn Tapestry," having met with considerable success. Miss Gordon has contributed to leading New Zealand and Australian journals, and in addition i s the author of a Greek play in blank verse.

Mrs. J. I\. Caldwell (Auckland) is staying at the quaint old village of Wendover, Bucks, to be near her son, Mr. C. D. Caldwell, who is at Halton, in the R.A.F., states our London correspondent. During the latter's vacation they will go to Mr. Caldwell's home, Castlederg, County Tyrone. They have in view a Continental tour for early October.

A late dance evening was held in the Public Hall, Papatoetoe, on Friday, by the local hockey club. An excellent programme was provided under the direction of the committee, which comprised Mesdames F. M. Waters and J. Kerr, Misses G. Sutton, R. Burnside, F. Campbell and E. Burnside. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss T. Hunt and Mr. W. Wyman, and Mr. R. Jury rendered selections on the xylophone.

A wealthy London woman who has been an enthusiastic playgoer for years, is the "owner-behind-the-scenes" of the West End's newest theatre, the Windmill, which was opened recently. Mrs. R. S. Henderson, the owner, is the only woman to build and own a West End theatre. On several occasions Mrs. Henderson has backed play productions, being one of those mystery figures who remain in tlio background.

A rlramntic.il evening in which three playettes were presented was held in the Parish Hall, Otahuhu, on Thursday. The entertainment was organised by the bargain stall committee for the forthcoming parish fair, and there was a good attendance. The plays and players were:— "Dreamlight," enacted by Messrs. D. Donaldson, E. Pearsc, H. Palmer, Mesdames Stanton, T. Mitchell, 11. Palmer and Misses P. Roberts, anrl M. Westmore. "The Brown Paper Parcel," Miss W. Parr, Miss E. Roberts and Miss Y. Ingham. "All a Mistake," Messrs. A. Morgan. E Pearse. D. Donaldson and Misses H. Parton, T._ Parsons, h. Dyne. At the intervals musical selections were played by Mrs. Walters and Misses Webber. The players and organisers were thanked by the vicar, Rev. R. J. Stanton.
