FIFTY YEARS AGO.
EXTRACTS FROM THE HERALD. The following are extracts from the New Zealand Herald of September 13, 1881: Cabled information seems to promise difficult work for the French not only in Tunis, but in Algeria. As a double stringpatriotic feeling against the invader and the fanatical feeling in the cause of Islam —is touched, the ferment appears to be spreading all over Barbary, into Tripoli at the one end and Morocco at the other. The sovereign of the latter country, the only native ruler in North Africa who is not in some way dependent on the Turkish Sultan, has written urging that, unless Turkey does something, its authority in Barbary will be cast off and that he also may lose his throne. Even if the quarrel with Germany should be got out of the way, these proceedings in Barbary are creating for France a very bitter rival feeling in Italy and in Spain, which latter nation is entertaining new ambitions. A meeting took place at Danzig between Tsar Alexander EH., Grand Dukes Vladimir and Alexis, and the Emperor of Germany and Prince Frederick William. Prince Bismarck was present at the interview, which was marked by the greatest cordiality. Bismarck promised to intro duce at an early date legislation to restore the German legation to the Vatican. Our Parliamentary correspondent understands opposition is seriously fomented iu the Council against the Railways Construction Bill. Here again Mr. Ormond's opposition is a supposed factor in the situation as he is known to be as antagonistic to this measure as to the property tax. The bill stands in some jeopardy.
