NAPIER PARK RACECOURSE. LAND RAISED FOUR FEET. The annual report of the Napier Park Racing Club states that, outside of damngo to the artesian wells necessitating two fresh bores being put down, the cost of repairs consequent on the earthquake _ was negligible, a few poynds being sufficient to repair the damaged chimneys. t On the other hand, advice had been received from competent authorities that an uplift of the land surrounding and including the course had taken place, whereby the levels had been raised in the vicinity of 4ft. This improvement was very welcome, and would be more appreciated as eoon as the drains were adjusted to dispose of surface water efficiently. MASTERTON CLUB'S MEETING. STAKES LIMITED TO £6OO. The Masterton Racing Club, in reversing its decision not to hold a spring meeting, resolved that the total stake-money for the eight races should _ not exceed £GOO. "If we do not race it is going to be the end of the club." said Mr. S. J W. Gill. He had been given to understand that the dates would not be taken up, but it appeared that that would happen. If united action had been taken by several clubs not to race find to seek a reduction in the totalisator tar something would have resulted. Several members considered tho club should race even if the stakes were reduced to a minimum. Mr. C. J. Bennett observed that the man who was going to be hit, if clubs raced with reduced, stakes, was the horseowner, Ho maintained that if the clubs got together and said they would not race until the totalisator tax was reduced something would result, j The secretary, Mr. N. H. James, read a prospective balance-sheet based on an assured t'irnover of £SOOO, and allowing for £535. in stages (seven races). On those figures it was estimated that there would be' a profit of £lOl. Working on an assumed turnover of £4OOO there would still .bo a profit., on the same figures, of £4O. Mr. Lawson said that before a meeting could be held some definite arrangement would have to be made in case of a 'oss The wholo thing came back to a question of finance. . . ... A general discussion followed, in which "the guarantors present expressed their willingness to meet the club in the event of a loss On having this assurance, and also with tho probability of tho two guarantors who were absent taking up a similar attitude, the stewards decided to hold the race meeting, on the basis as outlined by the secretary, expept that eight races be held instead of seven.
