FIFTY YEARS AGO.
.a. . EXTRACfS FROM THE HERALD. # The following are extracts from t|» New Zealand Herald of September 3. 1881: Recently a number of women petitioned; the Auckland City Council to set apart the city baths on certain days for their use. The council was not able to resist the touching appeal and set aside Wednesday and Saturday afternoons for the purpose. At the innovation, strange to say, none of the petitioners put in an appearance. But a supply of bathing costumes of varying styles is being provided, for even in this matter the vanity of th® female mind finds a congenial sphere id which to exercise itself. - Messages from Tunis report- that. 4 severe conflict between the French troops and a strong body of Arab insurgents resulted in the defeat of the former. Th» French Government has issued orders for the immediate despatch of reinforcements for the army in the Tunisian territory an% the embarkation of troops is now proceeding at Toulon and Marseilles.
