THEFT BY EMPLOYEES.
STOLEN GOODS EXCHANGED. "Both the accused had irreproachable characters until about six months ago," said Detective-Sergeant Kelly, in the Police Court on Saturday, when John Thomas Robinson, aged 55, packer, was charged with stealing goods valued at £4 16s, and receiv : ng from Alexander King Russell goods worth £4, knowing them to have been stolen. Russell, aged 27, .shop assistant, was charged with stealing goods valued at £4, and receiving from Robinson goods valued at £2 ss, knowing them to havo been stolen. Mr Moody, who represented both accused, entered pleas of guilty. Mr Kelly said tho case was rathor a painful one. For the past 14 years both accused had been employed in different departments by the same firm. About six months ago, apparently, each commenced to steal goods from his own department, and to exchange them with the other.
Mr. Moody said they had been very stupid offences Robinson was a marrieci man with five children, and both men had thrown away good positions. The firm was not anxious for them to bo imprisoned. Both accused were placed on probation for 12 months, and were ordered to make restitution.
