AUCKLAND CHAMPIONSHIP. FURTHER MATCHES DECIDED. The Auckland provincial amateur billiards championship for the Billiards, Limited. Shield was advanced another stags yesterday afternoon, when T. Tierney, a youthful aspirant, played H. Ward, a newcomer from aihi. Play was of a very even nature m trie opening stages, neither making any breaks of note. Ward held a slight lead at the first hundred mark. Both found it difficult to make any appreciable headway and missed many The scoring improved slowly. Tierney having the better or the play, and at the halfway mark he led by 252 to 205. Tierney scored more copsistently over the last hundred, and. although his opponent made strenuous efforts to overhaul his score, he ran out a winner by 23 points. The final scores were:—T. Tierney. 500; breaks of 20, 22 and 29. EE. Ward, 477; breaks of 23, 20 and 20. The evening game between L. G. Hemua and FTaylor attracted a large gathering o£ enthusiasts. Tne game opened brightly, both displaying confidence. _ Hemus at his sixth, visit to the table registered a run of 21. His opponent, however, bettered this immediately _ afterwards by running np to 30 before jailing. Taylor reached the century mark first, but had only a few points advantage. tiemus assumed the lead at His nest visit by making a nicely-played allround break of 4S. It was only momentary, however, as Taylor played well in making rans of 25 and 23. A further break by Taylor of 29 mnde the scores 239 to 177 in his favour. Hemus reduced the leeway slightly by adding a run of 23.. Overanxiety caused both players to miss some comparatively ea<»y shots, but their play generally was crisp, bright and entertaining:. Taylor was in again soon afterwards, scoring 31 before failing. The play slackened otr slightly at this stage. Hemua failed to score at his nest seven visits ta the table, his opponent paining ground by adding a run cf 25. Hemus then mad® runs of 20 and 2S and 21, the score being 431 to 420 in favour of Tayl.or. ' A further ran of 29 by Hemus gave him a lead or nitta points. The game was sternly contested over the remaining points, the players beins level at 456. Hemus reached 499 ana was unfortunate in playing a safety miss, th« balls being respotted for Taylor, who won. a great contest by one point. The final scores were:—F. Taylor. 50ft; breaks of 30. 25. 23 f 29 , 31, 25 and 25. L. Hemus, 499; breaks of 21, 48. 23, 20. 26 21 and. 29.. The game this evening is between JU. Smith and E. Staxkay.
