TRAM FARE RAISED.
VICTORIA AVENUE SECTION.
EFFORT TO REDUCE DEFICIT.
Owing to the substantial annual loss on the Victoria Avenue tram route the Transport Board decided yesterday on the recommendation of its manager, Mr. A. E. Ford, to increase the Id cash fare on the section between the Remuera post office and the Victoria Avenue terminus to 2d. The new faro is expected to reduce the loss on the section by £712 a year. The deficit under the penny fare for this section has} been £lsll a year. Mr. Ford recommended that the inward city terminus of the Victoria Avenue route be extended from Wellesley Street to the intersection of Queen and Customs Streets. On the outward trip Victoria Avenue cars, he said, would proceed via Customs Street, .Anzac Avenue and Svmonds Street. It should be understood that anyone boarding the cars in Queen Street would have to pay one additional section. On the question of the removal of the tram tracks '"n Victoria Avenue because of the non-paying nature of the run, and the substitution of buses, Mr. Ford said there would be considerable dissatisfaction if the line were taken up. He felt it was better that the losses should be spread over the whole system. If a bus service were inaugurated the loss would be £2755 a year.
