WATERFRONT BETTING.
TWO MEN HEAVILY FINED. Two men who were arrested on August 22 on charges of bookmaking and of loitering in Quay Street for the purpose of betting, Robert Francis Singe, aged 38, and Stuart Caslcy.-aged 41, appeared before Mr. P. K. , Huut, S.M., in the Police Court yesterday. Accused were represented by Mr. McLiver, and pleaded guilty to the charge of loitering. Detective-Sergeant Kelly stated that on the date in question the two accused were kept under observation and the police were quite satisfied that they were bookmakers. "We havo had repeated complaints. regarding bookmakers taking bets from waterside workers," Mr. Kelly said. "We have brought these charges to put an end to bookmaking about the waterfront. Both men have been befbro the Court before." A fine of £6O was imposed on Singe, and Caslev was fined £SO. They were given 14 days in which to pay.
