STOLEN PROPERTY.
SKILFUL POLICE WORK.
QUEST THROUGH THICK SCRUB
Remarkable skill was shown by the police in tracking through miles of rugged, thickly timbered country, and eventually recovering all the jewellery and pioperty stolen from the residence of Mr. W. T. Killen, of Gradule, New. South Wales. The property was valued at £2OO. Attempts were made to burn the house, which, at the lime of the robbery, was unoccupied.
Mr. Killen returned home on August 1, to discover his loss. Constable Caldwell and Constablo Wagland discovered a motor vehicle track about one month old. They followed this track 40 miles through thickly timbered country, to near Nindigully, where boot tracks were found leading to hollow logs in the scrub. The police split opon a log, and discovered portion of the stolen goods.
The constables then travelled another 40 miles, following the vehicle's; tracks through the scrub. When the tracks were almost obliterated, the police, reinforced by Constable Laird, separated, and scoured the scrub. Discovering a heap of fallen timber, beneath which was found freshly-disturbed earth, they dug down 6ft., and unearthed three large trunks, which contained the balance of the proceeds of the robbery. No arrest was made.
