MONEY FOR SIDE ROADS.
RIDING FUNDS EXHAUSTED. FRANKLIN COUNTY POSITION. [FKOiI OUB. OWN COEH.ESPOKDEKI.] PUKEKOHE. Monday. A statement was made by the chairman, Mr. J. N. Massey, M.P., at to-day'* meeting of the Franklin County Council that in certain ridings of tfce county the ordinary rate revenue for the current financial year, exclusive of the amount allocated for county main roads, had already been expended. A deputation from Lewis Road, Karaka, asked the council to provide out of ordinary rates a sum of £SOO toward metalling tbe road, which, it was stated, had become impissable in places. The member for the Karaka Riding, Mr. A. R~ T. Urquhart, said the riding this year had £760 to spend on its roads other than county main roads. To date over £SOO had been expended, leaving only £2OO available to cover works required between now and the end of March.
Tlie chairman added that in certain other ridings in the county the whole of the money available for side-roads this rear had already been spent. It was decided that the engineer, Mr. J. F. McArthnr, should prepare an estimate of the cost of metalling the road, the length of which was given as slightly over two miles. It was agreed that meanwhile Mr. Urquhart and the engineer should inspect the road, with a view to having the imDassable places metalled when the weather allowed this.
