POWER EXTENSION.

LAST OF MAIN UNES. BEACHLANDS AND MARAETAI. The extension of its power lines through Beachlands to Maraetai, a distance of 12 miles, was decided on yesterday by the Auckland Power Board. This will ba the last main line in the full reticulation of the board's " are-i. The general manager, Mr. R. H. Bartlev. said the distances were made up as follows: Lines carrying low tension wires, 3 miles; carrying high and low tension wires, 1.6 miles; carrying high tension wires, 7.4 miles, distances had been laid out to provide for all the load that was offering, but excluding any lengthy branch lines to supply isolated consumers. The total cost of._th© extension, including services and meters, Mr. Bartlev estimated at £B4OB, and in addition £3OO allowed by way of contingencies, a total of £S7OB.

Of this sum, Mr. Bartiey said, £4458 was represented, by materials, which were already in store, and could be used on the work. This left a balance of £3950, made up of labour, £1660, cartage, £3BO, general materials to be purchased, £I4OO, cost, of restranding cable, £l6O, and transformers, £350. It was estimated that the maximum revenue the board could allow from the extension would be £270 a year, which meant that only slightly over 3 per cent, would be returned on the capital cost. The board considered the extension from several angles, including the provision of employment and the development of the district, and decided-to proceed with the work.
