ALLEGED ASSAULT.
| INCIDENT IN NEWMARKET. | ACCUSED SENT FOR TRIAL. A charge of assaulting; Henry Barstow, with intent to rob him, was preferred against John Patrick Davis, aged 29, barman and labourer (Mr. Aekms), in the Police Court yesterday. He pleaded not guilty. Henry Barstow said that shortly after 6 p.m. on Saturday he was walking down a lane leading to the Newmarket railway station yards when he was struck on the back of the head and thrown down. The assailant then went through the pockets of witness' clothes. As it was dark at the time witness could not identify accused as the man who assaulted him. Constable Hendren said that when he came on the scene accused was seated astride complainant and holding him by the throat with one hand. With the other hand he was examining complainant's pockets. Accused was slightly under the influence of liquor at the time. The magistrate, Mr. F. K. Hunt, committed accused to the Supreme Court for trial. An application for bail was deferred.
OFFENCE BY LABOURER. PRISON FOR TWO WEEKS. A plea of guilty was entered by William Drennan, aged 29, labourer, when charged in the Police Court yesterday with assaulting Ray Hinton and with begging alms in Victoria Street. It was stated by the police that accused struck Hinton when the latter refused to give him money. Accused was sentenced to two weeks' imprisonment.
