PREPARING SHOW ANIMALS.
MEETING MODERN NEEDS. When the process of getting an animal up for show is injurious to its usefulness as a sire or dam, the prizes they win are dearly purchased. Present-day consumers' demand lean meat in small joints, and it is obvious that some show candidates of the pure breeds, with big frames on which a wealth of flesh has been piled for show purposes, are no use for consumption, and if they fail to breed thev are worse than useless, says the Live Stock Journal. If more of country agricultural societies encouraged the production of animals to meet present-day needs, such as judicious first crosses, for pairs of commercial cattle and pens of sheep and pigs, they would obtain animals suited for modern needs iri the commercial store and fat stock markets of this country. That is going to be the trend of future livestock breeding in this country.
