COLLISION WITH A COW.
D,EATH OF MOTOR-CYCLIST.
MISHAP AT NGATEA.
[from our own correspondent.] THAMES, Wednesday,
The inquest concerning the death of Walter John Douglas Johnson, who was killed on the night of August 1, when his motor-cycle collided with a cow at Ngatea, was completed to-day before the coroner, Mr. W. Bongard. Graham L. Connell, a motor-driver, of Waitakaruru, stated that he found deceased lying across his motor-cycle close to the middle of the road. There was a cow lying the other side of the road about 18ft. away. Witness put Johnson in his bus and took him to Thames Hospital. Dr. Wilkin, house surgeon at Thames Hospital, described Johnson's injuries. He never regained consciousness, dying on August 3. Mrs. Mary Laurence said owing to bad fences it was possible for her cows to get on to the road. The dead cow was her property. Constable White, of Thames, said the cow bore evidence of having been dragged along the road. The back wheel of the cycle was locked by the brake, so it was evident that Johnson had applied the brake before the accident. The coroner returned a verdict that Johnson met his' death by accidentally colliding with a cow.
