A DICKENS EVENING.

NAVY LEAGUE SOCIAL. A programme of character sketches and other extracts from the works of Dickens was presented fcy members of the Dickens Fellowship at a social evening held bv the Auckland branch of the Navy League in the league rooms, Customs Street West, yesterday. Mr. Townley Little presided and a large number of members and friends fully appreciated the excellence of the programme. Three character sketches were given, the first entitled " Queer Street " being rendered by Messrs. J. E. Green, T. Vivian and Preston Chambers, and the second two, "The Wilfers' Wedding Anniversary" and "The Mendicant s Bride," bv Mrs" Kenneth Gordon, Mrs. R. H. Culpan, Miss Maisie Free, Rev, A. B. Chappeil and Mr. G. G. Grant. A reading from " Mrs. Lirriper's Lodgings, was given by Mr. C. Kidson, and " Mr. Winkle on " the lee." from Pickwick Papers." was read by Miss Statham. Mrs. C. Wolsteneroft read the _one-act play, '* Lonesome Like," a- delightful cameo of Lancashire life, by Harold" Brighouse, and songs were given by Mrs. Cuipan.
