ARREST IN PAWNSHOP.

ESCAPE OF ANOTHER MAN. Tho arrest of a young man when handing over jewellery and other articles in a Queen Street pawnshop yesterday is believed by the police to be a step toward clearing up a series of perplexing burglaries which has occurred in Auckland recently. Tho suspect will bo chaiged in the Police Court this morning. Another man thought to bo involved was being conducted to the wharf polico ofhee yesterday by a detective when ho sud denly ran away and escaped. Several thefts from residences have been reported since Friday and practically tho entire detective force was mobilised early yesterday morning to watch for tho expected disposal of stolen articles. About 10 o'clock Detective 11. 15. Knight visited a pawnshop in Queen Street and had just left when ho noticed a man enter. Returning, the detectivo was in time to see jewellery being weighed on tho scales. Detectivo Knight arrested the man, who is aged 21, and seized the jewellery and other goods. While making tho arrest Detective Knight was awaro that another man was standing on tho pavement outside. Having sufficient to occupy him, Detective Knight was unable to investigate tho bystander's movements and when tho detective left tho pawnshop with his capture the other man had disappeared.

Shortly afterwards another detective outside the chief post office noticed a man suspected of complicity in a number of thefts. Approaching him, tho detectivo asked him to walk across to the wharf police offico. When Quay Street was reached the suspect suddenly ran away, with tho detective in pursuit. The man darted into a lane which leads into Customs Street and disappeared. THIEF'S LARGE HAUL. JEWELLERY AND CLOTHING. Jewellery, clothing and money of a total value of about £l2O were stolen fiorn tho homo of Mr. A. V. Penn, at 56, Great South Road, during the week-end. The marks of an instrument were found on two back doors, but, apparently unable to gain entrance by this means, tho thief broke a glazed panel at tho front of tho house and opened a door. Mr. and Mrs. Penn were out during Saturday evening, and on returning found tho utmost disorder. In one bedroom all tho clothing had been cleared out of the drawers, but a locked wardrobe had not been opened. Jewellery and clothing were stolen from tho homo of Mr. H. B. Jenkin, of 5, Haydn Avenue, One Tree Hill, on Friday afternoon. A window was opened by the intruder. £23 IN BANKNOTES. | HO WICK RESIDENT'S LOSS. Banknotes to the value of £23 wero stolen from a cottage at Ilowick, when a thief gained entrance through a bedroom window. The contents of a handbag were removed, but several articles of jewellery wero not- touched. SHOP AT TIMAEU. SUITS AND OVERCOATS TAKEN. [BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] TIMARU, Monday. Tho premises of Mr. S. G. McClelland, mercer and clothier, in tho main street, wero broken into in the early hours of this morning and goods to tho value of £3O were stolen. The burglar broke a class panel in the front door and unlocked tho door. Ho took three suits and three overcoats and other goods. No attempt was mado to rob tho safo or the till.
