The deficit on the French railways for 1950 was £14,500,000, and, judging by the half-year's returns, it will bo £21,500,000 in 1931. In crder to placo the lines on an economic basis it is proposed to raise the fares by 25 per cent., to close many stations, and abolish certain local lines, substituting motor-omnibuses or light motor vehicles which will use the railway lines.
