LEVEL CROSSING SIGNALS.

TIME OF OPERATION.

CHANGE AT MOUNT ALBERT.

Alterations in the time of operation of signals at the Woodward Road railway crossing,' Mount Albert, were notified in a letter received from a member at a meeting of the Council of the Auckland Automobile Association last evening. The writer said he had been advised of the alterations by Mr. W. H. H. Grapes, automatic signal inspector of the Railway Department, who had explained that the signal referred to was previously set working automatically by the fall of the starting signals at Avondale and Mount Albert stations and was cut off by the trains passing over a switch on the line. That system, however, had resulted in the signal operating for too long at a time on certain occasions. The department had now altered the operation of the signal to a period mors in keeping with motor traffic.

The inspector had also pointed out that Mount Albert station was being derated and in future no staff would be maintained there and all signals would be purely automatic. In this way the human element would be eliminated.
