BROTHER PRELATE'S REMARKS ALLEGED MENTAL CONFUSION. .LONDON", August. 1. " The Bishop of Birmingham, Dr. E. W. Barnes, does incalculable injury to tjie Christian Church by his crude accusations of magic and superstition, which como entirely from a mental confusion." says the Bishop of Gloucester, Dr. A. C. Headlam, in an article in the diocesan magazineReferring to Dr. Barnes" recent phrase, " the so-called miracle of the Mass," he says the method of stating the action of the Eucharist is customary among imperfectly instructed theologists, but does not represent the Church's teaching and conception. Dr. Headlam adds: " How is it possible that the bread and wine can in any way bo the channel of grace unless in some sense that which is conveyed is present 1 There really is no great difference between what Dr. Barnes teaches and what he attacks. Both forms of doctrine have been recognised as legitimate within the Church."
