MOUNT EDEX'S VICTORY. ifount Edon was fully extended to beat North Shore, but the team played a sotinc game and the victory was deserved, although it was gained by a, last-miuuto score. Mounl Eden secured tho ball from tho bully and : had North Shore penned up in the tirsl I , few moments of the game. The Xorll: Shore forwards made several fast sorties, but the Mount Eden defence was sound. Wellbourne, Chaplin and Fletcher were doing good work for Mount Eden, tho North Shore backs having to put in somo strenuous defence. A scramble in the North Shore goalmouth was relieved by a Mount Eden infringement and from the free hit Keid, followed up by Penman, made ground. H. Jones cleared the ball, and Wellbourne, jn a fine run, broke' through the defence and scored. From the bully Mount Eden again attacked and North Shore had two narrow escapes in quick succession. The third time, from a tussle in the circle, Chaplin hit the ball in. With the game decidedly against it. North Shore made a vigorous attack and Reid was unlucky in falling just before shooting at the end of a fast wing run. After a short period in North Shore quarters. Mount Eden was forced to defend and after a tussle Keid sent the ball across to Monteith, who goaled just before half-time, the spell ending with the score:—Mount Eden, 2: North Shore. 1. Up and down play occupied the first few Binutes of the second spell. Finally, from ft corner, Haggett shot. Rankin returned the ball and Penman scored off tho rebound. Hard hitting and rather aimless play were indulged in by both teams, and the ball ranged up and down the field witb- ' out seriously endangering either goal. In the last few minutes of the game some seater movements were seen and just before time, after a sustained attack, Flelcher &ored the winning goal for Mount Eden, the game ending:—Mount Eden, 3: North Shore, ' Messrs. A. Williams and R. Avery were leferees. V ■■ i ■» i A GOOD RECOVERY. / WIN FOR SOMERVILLE. Scmerville made a great recovery by de foaling St. Luke's by four goal.s to three. At the end of the first spell St. Luke's was leading by three goals to one, but the position was completely reversed in the second spell. The return of E. Watts to Somerville's ranks undoubtedly was largely responsible for the team's victory. Somerville got the ball from the bully and E. Watts ' broke away, being stopped in the circle by F. Clark. St. Luke's could not take the hall away far until Stuart ran down the line. Hi 3 centre went too far and after & period of closely-contested play E. Watts secured near the half-way line, and. in a speedy solo run, beat tho opposition and goaled with a fast shot. St. Luke's forced ths pace and a tew moments later Grace sent the ball to Brown, who. with good stick work, evaded the defence and equalised the score. St. Luke's was now working hard and held the territorial advantage, in spite of occasional/ sorties by Somerville. Finally, from a throw-in near the SomcrviHe twenty-five, Burnett intercepted and goaled neatly. From a penalty corner E. .Watts sent in a fast shot which was blocked md two further shots in rapid succession from a melee were almost miraculously stopped. Somerville took a turn at attacking, but before long St. Luke's was away down the field and from a centre by Stuart Burnett snapped in a fast goal. At halftime the score was:—St. Lukes', 3: Somerville, I. Scrappy play occupied the first few minutes of the second spell neither side getting within shooting distance of tho £Oalß until E. Watts and C. Watts, by some beautiful combined work, reached tho circle. The lack of a third forward to follow through when tho 'hall was temporarily blocked lost Somerville a certain goal. Somerville continued to attack vigorously and St. Luke's was penned in the circle for some time. Good defence saved seversjl ehots, but finally, from close play in the : circle, Hunter shot, the ball going into . the net off Wattam's pads. Wattam made a good save of a stinging shot from E. : Watts, but Somerville wsb soon back in the circle and a melee gave St. Luke's somo anxious moments. The danger was momentarily averted, but Somerville kept up the Pressure and at the end of a fast run Hunter shof Wattam returned, but E. Watts stepped in and equalised the score. The pace was now willing and St. Luke's made a sortie, only to be repulsed near the circle. Smith sent away to G. Watts, who in turn passed to Seccombe. the lastJiamed scoring. In the last two minutes Stf Luke's made strenuous efforts to make the score equal, but the game ended:— Somerville, i; St. Luke's, 3. Messrs. L. C. Kent and H. Watts wore teiMces. /
