AUSTRALIAN MEAT.
QUANTITIES FOR EXPORT.
Volume of export of frozen mutton was well maintained by Australia during the past season, despite the extremely low overseas prices. The collapse of the wool market influenced graziers to ship where they would otherwise have, retained their sheep for wool production. Exports wers adversely affected by the late lambing ■ season in the southern States. Opera* tions did not start on a large scale until September last, whereat considerable numbers were treated in July and August during the 1929 season. . Seasonal conditions in the south have
had a favourable influence on the Queensland cattle industry. Unfortunately, though, the rainfall north was not well distributed, especially in the Clermont and Charters Towers districts. The number of fat cattle for export has, in consequence, been much below expectations, and the establishments at ToWnsville, Bowen and Kockhampton will close earlier than usual. . . The stock submitted for export in Australia in the financial year 1929-30 was : Cattle, 355,767; calves, 74,5/6; sheep, 1595,000; lambs, 2,282,000, and pigs, 31,700. The estimate for the year closing on June 30 is:—Cattle, calves, 62,038; sheep, 1,481,000; lambs, 2,516,000, and pigs, 142,600. The %" reß for Victoria for 1929-30 were:—Cattle, 4423; calves, 1861; sheep, 505,000; lambs, 1 686,000, and pigs, 7796. _ For the year, closing at the end pfthis month -le totals are :-Cattle, 4192; calves, 1469; sheep, 385,000; lambs, 1,536,000; and pigs, 40,017. . . . .x The falling off, except in pigs, is attri- { buted to the unfavourable seasonal conditions which prevailed during the middle of 1930. Indications point to a large increase in the numbers of sheep and lambs being available for export in_ the 1931-32 season. In New_ South Wales, nic exports for the year ending last month showed a -rise from 2800 to 10,727, and in Queensland from 21,000 to 84.000. A beginning was made in South Australia with the export of frozen pork. .
