There was a general improvement in track*, conditions at Epsom yesterday, when the cinders were again in use. With the exception of the local candidates engaged at . Addington and a few of those who will compete at the Auckland Trotting Club's meet- , ing next .month, the majority of the horses were restricted to jogging exercise. Jewel Pointer (F. J. Smith) and Great Balliri (C. Smith) were associated in a useful essay over three circuits, the last half showing 1.13. Given a repeat task. Jewel Pointer was sent a mile and a-half, being picked up at the mile and a-quarter by Great Ballin. Pacing in great style, the pn.ir i came home the final half in 1.111, Great Ballin holding the advantage he gained at the start. Jewel Pointer registered 3.48. for 12 furlongs, and Great Ballin ran the mile and a-quarter in 3.6!-. Auto Machine (A. Brown) worked strongly over several circuits, being allowed to step along tho'last mile at a 2.25 gait. He did his. work in most comfortable fashion, and sprinting homo from the four-furlongs disc, recorded 1.91. If Auto Machine fails to salute the judge presently it will not be for want of condition. Dad's Hope (W Clifton) relished a steady allotment over 12 furlongs, which he left behind in 4.4, the final half-mile at a 2.30 clip. Given a second run over two circuits Dad's Hope again paced resolutely to finish up the task showings 1.13 for the last halfj mile. I Mountain Dell (L. Mitchell), after eprint--1 ing a couple of furlongs, set off from the two-miles post and, maintaining an even pace throughout, completed the journey in 5.4, each milo taking 2.32. Mountain Doll was pulling in the early stages, but was blowing hard at the end Explosion (W Clifton) trotted several laps steadily, but was not sent against the watch. Later he started at the mile and a-half post, but before covering a furlong broke up badly and was not persevered with, although he trotted a quarter in smart time before returning to the paddock. Prince Etawah (A. Shepherd) went over several laps at a fair clip, pacing with freedom. Prince Etawah is somewhat on the gross side as the result of a holiday, but should soon come to hand when given more solid tasks. . ■ W. Willetts made a reappearance with Oliver Thorpe, who looks in splendid heart after a short respite. Oliver Thorpe was in great- condition when turned out and it 1 should not take Willetts long to get him back to racing order. Oliver Thorpe's ; brother Nathaniel is still undergoing treatment for leg trouble, and eo far no decision has been arrived at regarding his future movements. Benefice (K. Morrison) worked at a useful clip over two miles. After covering half the distance, 6he was joined by a Gold Bell maiden in F. Herring's charge, and together they travelled a half in 1.16.. Continuing on , under a big pull Benefice piloted the novice ' over the next section in 1.19. The young I pacer did hie work pleasingly and displayed a good deal ol promise. 1 Margaret Wallace was not sent against the . watch, but revelled in her allotment, and was keen on setting a faster pace. After : her recent holiday Margaret Wallace is a little on the jolly side, but after a few work-outs she should soon b'e back to racing condition. t j RACING FIXTURES. i July 22, 23—Manawatu Racing Club.
