INTOXICATED DRIVER.
CAR MOUNTS SAFETY ZONE. MAGISTRATE IMPOSES £25 FINE. An allegation that he was intoxicated while in charge of a motor-car was admitted by Carl Berger Heriorth, aged 29, a native of Denmark, in the Police Court yesterday. He was represented by Mr. Keegan. Detective-Sergeant Kelly stated that shortly after 11 p.m. on Monday accused drove a motor-car on to a safety zone in Karangahape Road. When seen by a constable the vehicle was " astride" the zone, one set of wheels being on either side. Accused, who was intoxicated and very unsteady on his feet, remarked to the constable two or three times, " I have made a mistake."
Counsel said accused was a travelling salesman. On the night in question he had been entertaining some friends, one of whom he drove home. In turning from Pitt Street into Karangahape Road he failed to notice the safety zone and drove across it.
The magistrate, Mr. F. K. Hunt, imposed a fine of £25 and cancelled Herforth's driving licence for six months. "He can sell his car; he will not need it for some time," observed the magistrate, when counsel asked for extended time in which to pay the fine. Herforth was allowed seven days in which to find the money.
