DEMAND FOR TAX-FREE BONDS

Firmer levels for Government taxfree loans wero confirmed with trading on the Auckland Stock Exchango yesterday in 1938 4s P er cent. War Bonds and Inscribed Stock at £99 ss, an advance of 25s on the levels of the last transactions in Auckland. Further supplies of bonds wero wanted at £99 2s 6d and of Inscribed Stock at £99. A rise of 7s 6d \vas registered by Inscribed Stock, 1933, 5£ per cent., which wero dealt in at £9B 7s 6d. Banks wero more active and support improved a shade, for Commercials o! Australia and Unions. Australasias were marked down lis on the last local sale, changing hands at £9 Is. Nationals of New Zealand declined 5s in a. deal at £4 4s 6d. The higher price of £lO 3s was paid for Nationals of Australasia, a rise of 2s on "the last local sale. Auckland Gas retained steady attention arid requirements remained unsatisfied with a current-price sale at 23s 6d, which prico was offered for-more. The contributing issue was done at 18s, a gain of 6d. There was little alteration in shipping. Devonport Ferries made late rates with sale at 19s 6d, the one parcel meeting requirements. In general investments there was slightly improved support for Colonial Sugars but generally the section remained quiet. Active trading in mining was accompanied by a further hardening in Waihi Grand Junctions which, after changing hands at the current price of 3s 9d, were dealt in at 3s lid and 4s, More were available at 4s and buyers closed offering 3s lid. Waihis were taken a shade firmer at 15s 7J,d. King Solomons were also an active line and late rates were maintained in three sales at 2s and a fourth at 2s lOd. Blackwaters were done at 2s 9d.
