BELGIUM STREET SCHEME.
TRANSPORT BOARD'S VIEW. MATTER FOR CITY COUNCIL. Tho attitude of the Auckland Transport Board toward the proposed widening of Belgium Street and the construction of a tunnel under Karangahape Road was discussed at a meeting of the board yesterday, when a reply was made to a recent deputation of Queen Street business men. Tho board discussed tho matter in committee, and it was decided to notify the deputation that the board was not yet in a position to state what its future policy would bo regarding traffic outlets. The deputation had expressed the opinion that the Belgium Street scheme was urgent and should be proceeded with immediately. In view of its intention to attend tho City Council meeting to-mor-row evening tho delegation sought an early and favourable reply from the board.
Members of the .board generally took the view that insufficient was at present known about ,the proposal. The opinion was also expressed that it was not the function of the board to assume responsibility for views on street widening, which was more properly a matter for the City Council.
