TESTS OF CONCRETE.
PANMURE-HOWICK ROAD. Fdr the purposo of testing the .wear-, ing qualities of concrete road surfaces the Main Highways Board has put' in hand the drilling of cylindrical blocks, five • inches in diameter, at intervals of: fivo 1 chains, from the Panmure-Howick main highway. These blocks will be subjected to compression and other tests,' and in fivo years' time, similar cores of concrete will be drilled from the road for comparison, in order to x show the rate of wear and disintegration. These tests later will be carried out on behalf of the board on other concrete roads in Auckland. The machine which driljs out the blocks can cut one in 10 minutes. At yesterday's meeting of the Manukau County Council, the engineer, Mr. ,'J. R. Pago, said he would x not have thought so many blocks wpuld have been necessary for the tests. However, the holes will be filled again with fast-setting concrete and the Highways Board would bear all the cost.
