CITY MISSION AFFAIRS.

Sir, —I am sorry if your correspondents, "R.G.H." and "Fair Play/' think I am antagonistic to the City Mission. It has done, and is doing, very necessary work, but surely when "Fair Play" says, "they do not make a fuss about it," lie is doing the missioner small credit. As regards the contention that the mission is not run for profit, that, to, me, seems like an attempt to draw the proverbial red herring across the scent. The "mission" of the mission is (among other purposes) to distribute the contributions in money and kind which the charitably-disposed public provide for relief of the genuine needy. That the staff of the mission is well paid for this is borne out in its published balance-sheet, which shows that over £3OOO of the money donated went in salaries and wages. Possibly "R.G.H." will now understand my suggestion that it is essential to make sure that the best possible use is made of the money Another item in the balance-sheet which could be reasonably queried is the net loss of £479 incurred in the publication of its official organ, the Drifter. Regarding the question of bequests, and "Fair Play's" contention that there has only been one (of £2OO a few years ago, to quote your correspondent), if he will refer to tho mission balance-sheet recently published, he will see one of £SOO, in addition to other items described as "grants." Enquiry.
