FALSE REPRESENTATION.
A WIDOW DEFRAUDED. LABOURER SENT TO GAOL. A sentence of one year's imprisonment was imposed by Mr. F. 11. Levien, S.M., in the Oneluinga Police Court yesterday on a labourer, Thomas Connolly, aged 31, who pleaded guilty to stating falsely that he was an udopted son of a wealthy resident of Hastings, with a view to obtaining sums of £4O and £SO, Ada Noonan, widow, said sho had known accused about three years. He had boarded at her house and had told her he was an adopted son of the Hastings resident. In consequence she had advanced him sums of £4O and £SO. Police evidence showed that accused had arrived from England about five years ago and had done very little work. It had been his custom to live on the generosity of others.
