HERALD'S SPECIAL FORECAST. COLD . AND SHOWERY. Tho following weather forecast for 24 hours, from 7 a.m. to-day, was supplied by Mr. H. M. Vincent last evening:— The extensive westerly storm system is still the dominating weather influence over and around New Zealand. The intensity of the depression has been accentuated by the proximity of tho high pressure area, crossing the northern Tasnmn Sea, thus causing a steep barometric gradient. Weather conditions of a distinctly wintry nature are expected with exceptionally cold ' temperatures. Heavy showers are indicated in most districts, accompanied by hail and thunder at times in places near the west coast. An almost general snowfall is likely in southern districts. Westerly to south-westerly winds, strong to gale, and squally. Rough to heavy seas on the west coast. Local outlook:—Cold and showery, with heavy squalls from the west. Tho Government, meteorologist reported last evening as follows; The last of a long series of westerly depressions has been crossing the Pominion to-day. A moderate anti-cyclone is centred over Tasmania. but pressure is falling off the New South Wales coast. Indications are for south-westerly winds, strong to gale force, but .decreasing in the south. Seas heavy in tin Taranaki Bight and in Foveaux Strait, elsewhere rough. ' Strong but decreasing southerly winds in the eastern Tasmah Sea, with, rough seas. The weather will bo cold, changeable and squally. Showers in most districts and snow or ,hail in parts of the South Island, improving soon on the west const of tho South Island- and in southern districts.
