STOCKS AND SHARES.
THE AUCKLAND EXCHANGE. GOVERNMENT BONDS SOUGHT. Increased support for Government taxfree bonds and a further weakening in the banks group were the notable features of a quiet day on the Auckland Stock Exchange yesterday. Offers for per cent. War Bonds, 1938, 1939 and 1941, were lifted another 2s 6d to £9B 2s 6d, without attracting holders, and offers for 4£ per cent. Inscribed Stock, 1938 and 1939, were vainly advanced 5s to £9B. In almost every instance holders yielded ground in the banking group. Commercials of Australia were released 8d lower at 13s lOd, and more were quoted at 14s. A fall of 17s 6d was registered by New South Wales, which were secured at £24 12s 6d. Buyers of Unions offered £6 6s, holders asking £6 13s. Easier levels also prevailed in insurance, New Zealands changing hands 3d cheaper at 41s 9d. A similar fall took place in South British, which were obtained lato on Monday at 51s. Other sections remained fairly steady at recent levels. Less support was forthcoming for New Zealand Breweries, offers for which were marked down 6d to 34s 3d, while sellers made a similar concession to 35s 3d. General investments were little changed. but the only business recorded was in Wilsons Cements, which recovered 8d in a transaction at 35s 6d. The mining group provided the bulk of the day's sales. Waihis were Id stronger, with two deals at 15s 7d, which price was available for more. Grand Junctions registered a sharp .advance and business 4d dearer at 3s 5d was followed by further trading at 3s 6d. A slight im'provement on southern levels was made by Cornish Points, which changed hands at lUd, and Mahakipawas had 'sale a shade easier at 7£d. King Solomons were done'agam at 2s 9kl and 2s 9d, Mount Lyells were transferred 8d easier at 17s lOd. CLOSING QUOTATIONS. Buyers. Sellers, v ' £ s. d. . £ s. d. ' ' 'BANKS.
