CROPS DAMAGED BY PIGS.
MAORI WOMEN SUE FARMER. A QUESTION OF VALUE. : ■ [BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] WAIHI, Tuesday. Damage done to crops of potatoes, kumaras and maize by* pigs which broke on to their section at Whiritoa, near Waihi, resulted in two native women, Tuihana Kereopa and Whakahoro Kereopa, suing a neighbouring farmer, Wallace Hugh Ross, in the Waihi Court to-day for £35 damages. Defendant admitted that his pigs had been on the property, but contended that the claim was excessive in , view of the of the holding and the low .price of produce. . Counsel for defendant, Mr. F. C. V. Clark, contended that the Maoris should be compensated purely from the point of view of the value of the food destroyed, as they did not regard their gardens in the same way as Europeans. Mr. F. W. Platts, S.M., said some allowance roust be made for inconvenience and awarded plaintiffs £ls. with costs, £7, 17s 6d.
