RATES FOR THE, YEAR. [from our own correspondent.] PUKEKOHE. Tuesday. When rates for the current financial year were decided on by the Pukokoho Borough Council last evening, the Mayor, Mr John Routly, mentioned that the total amount would be less by £570 than last year. However, the reduction in the ratable value of the borough, following the recent general revaluation, meant, an increase in the total rates in the pound. Last year the valuation was £885,000, while this year it was £805,000. As a measure of economy, it was decided to reduce tho number of street lights in the borough by ten. A motion by Dr. A. T. Begg to reopen tho matter of salary and wages reduction with a view to making a more uniform " cut " was defeated by 5 votes to 4/
