UNEMPLOYMENT LEVY.

INSTALMENTS NOT PAID. THREE DEFENDANTS FINED. Charges of failing to pay the December instalment of the unemployment levy were brought against three men in the Magistrate's Court yesterday. Richard Ash, fanner, of Mount Roskill, and his brother, James Ash, were each convicted and fined £2 and costs by the magistrate, Mr. F. K. Hunt. The third defendant was Samuel Arthur, a master baker. Counsel, Mr. Burt, said that owing . to«, temporary unemployment defendant had been unable to pay the December instalment of the levy. On May 26 he had paid four instalments and although he was now ahead with his payments he had been prosecuted.

"I suggest that this is pure revenuehunting," added counsel, whose client was fined 10s and costs.
