NATIONAL BABY WEEK.

QUEEN MARY'S INTEREST. MESSAGE TO THE COUNCIL. LONDON, June 30. Queen Mary, in a message to the National Baby Week Council on the occasion of its 15th anniversary, pays tribute to its splendid educational work and adds that the gratifying decrease of infant mortality can be ascribed to . the effective awakening of public opinion.

"I am interested to observe that the council is stressing the welfare o£ the child from one to five years of age, and also the demands for a national maternity scheme," says Her Majesty.

Last year Mombasa won the Baby Week Challenge Shield,, in spite of the peculiar local conditions. Babies in the first week after birth are fed in Mombasa on rice and porridge. After that, for 40 days, as an addition to the milk ia the porridge, there is mixed sweet tembo, an alcoholic drink made from coconuts. Complaints are treated by witchcraft, the methods including branding the chest and back with a red-hot iron.
