FIFTY YEARS AGO.

EXTRACTS FROM THE HERALD. Tho following are extracts from the New Zealand Herald of June 29, 1881: To-day the new church of St. Sepulchre's will bo opened for divine worship by, Bishop Cowic by a consecration servico. Tho church will be one of the handsonn est in the province, if not in the colony, and will accommodate nearly 700 adults. The church was built by Mr. James, ol Ponsonby, at a cost of about £3OOO, the total cost including £I3OO for the site, and amounts for fittings, etc., being about £5300. The fortnightly meeting of the Harbout Board was held yesterday. There was an unusual amount of correspondence, and tho sitting was prolonged! until after dark, when a solitary candle was brought up to enable tho secretary to record his minutes and, possibly, to /indicate the position of the chairman. Mr. McKenzie again endeavoured to retard the construction of tho largo graving dock, but ho stood alone, although several members voted with him in respect to obtaining further information re the floating docks. A copy of the revised version of the New Testament lay in our publishing office, Queen Street, yesterday, and was inspected by a large number of persons. There will be a great demand for the volume when booksellers receive stocks by the next mail, and Biblical criticism will undoubtedly be a fashionable study, for somo time. A public meeting will be held to-day to consider the best means of receiving and entertaining the two Royal Princes, who will arrive in Auckland with tho detached squadron. As no definite proposal has been made, oi course no public reception can be accorded them, as they arrive simply as midshiipmen of 11.M.5. Bacchante. It has been suggested that a citizens' ball may be held, while Their Royal Bignesses may be provided with good sport in the way of deer-stalking ab Motutapu, where deer are now. plentiful. They may probably be provided with hunters to attend the Pakuranga Hunt Club meetings.
