AUSTRALIAN STAMPS.

MANY NEW DESIGNS.

THE HARBOUR BRIDGE ISSUE.

The .Australian Postmaster-General, Mr* Green, has approved a number of new designs for postage stamps. I When the Sydney Harbour Bridge is completed, the event will be commemorated by a special issue of 2d, (3d and 2:s stamps. Each stamp will bear an artistic picture of the completed bridge. The 2d stamps will be red, the 6d blue and the 2s denomination chocolate. -

The present 6cl air mail stamps are to be replaced at .in early date by a new 6d chocolate-coloured stamp. The design' will bo similar to that of tho Kingsford Smith issue, but the words "air mail" will bo used in place of the words "Kingsford Smith's world flights" beneath, tha , two hemispheres. Arrangements are also well advanced for the issue of a series of stamps bearing pictures of Australian animals and birds. One stamp of this series will depict two kangaroos, and others will show . the Australian kookaburra, the platypus and the lyre bird. ' To commemorate the completion of 10 years of British occupation in New Guinea, the Minister of Defence, Mr. Chifley, is arranging for a special issue of' stamps 'for that territory, and these will be ready in a month's time. The bird of paradise will be pictured on them, and in the case of the "on service" stamps of this series, the letters "0.5." will be printed in block letters instead of tha lighter lettering used on the Australian issues.

Referring to the new stamps, Mr. Green said that some people would probably object to them, because they would not. bear the King's head, but apparently the fact- was loss, sight of that until recently the 3d. 4d. 5d and other stamps did nob bear the King's head. Arrangements were being made for the King's head to appear on stamps of other values than those that would bp used to depict Australian animals, and he intended to sea that the new King's head designs wera such that they would be a credit to th* Commonwealth. *
