ADVICE BY CARDINAL.
CATHOLICS AND POLITICS
CONSCIENCE TO BE GUIDE
LONDON. June 17
Cardinal Bourne, in an address at Edinburgh, when answering questions from Roman Catholics regarding the British parties to which they might belong, it would be generally admitted that very few British Labour people and certainly no lloman Catholic Labour people, would deny the right of private ownership, or preach class war, which the Pope's recent encyclical strongly condemned.
Tho Cardinal added, that doubtless there were some Labour people who technically were Socialists, which a true Catholic could not be. A Catholic must walk warily. While accepting a party's policy he must guard against theory and action conflicting with the Church's teaching or being contrary to the dictates of his conscience, which lie must assert frankly and courageously. Cardinal Bourne stated emphatically that a Catholic could not ally himself wholly with any party, all of which were largely composed of non-Catholics.
