SOUTH AFRICAN TOUR.
VISIT TO AUSTRALIA.
POSTPONEMENT PROBABLE,
CAPETOWN, June IG. The Cricket Board will meet shortly to settle finally whether there shall be an Australian tour. It is anticipated that the board will decide to postpone the tour, in view of the prevailing economic conditions in both countries. / . The South African Board suggested to the Australian authorities that the tour should be abandoned, or that an Australian team should visit South Africa. The Australians favoured a third suggestion, that the expenses of the South African tour should be paid by the Australian Board of Control, in addition to providing them with 15 per cent, of the profits. A cablegram was sent to South Africa to this effect. Ih estimating the total expenses- of a South African visit it must be remembered that assembly charges, steamer fares, and players' allowances would have to be met at par —that is, at increased cost if the rate of exchange was still adverse at the time of embarkation. Nevertheless, even at the present rate, the total should not be much over £20,000. If the gate receipts for the tour were only a third of tlioso for the last M.C.C. matches, Australia would make a handsome profit.
