NELSON APPLE EXPORTS.

NEW RECORD ESTABLISHED. The. Nelson apple export season closed with a new record established, the total reaching 815,447 cases of apples and pears, the increase being over 30,000 cases, compared with the previous season. Of this large lotal nearly 500,000 cases were sent to Great Britain, (he remainder going to (he Continent, South America and Canada. But for (he long dry spell the total would have been very much greater, a largo proportion of the fruit being of the smaller sizes. The fruit was of. a high standard, 504,737 cases being graded extra fancy, 244,809 fancy, and 37,134 good. A total of 49 varieties was exported, but the number of some varieties was very small. Stunners headed the list with 274,002 cases, Jonathans following with 169,012 cases, and Delicious with 136,969 cases. Then came a big drop to Cox Orange, 59.166 cases; Dunns, 47,262 cases; and Statesman, 32,562 cases. Reviewing the season, the shipping supervisor at Port Kelson (Mr. J. 11. Brunt) said all parties had co-operated thoroughly and the result had been tlmt matters had run particularly smoothly. The shipment of the fruit had been carried out in a satisfactory manner, there being no serious hold-up. Shed accommodation had been increased at Mapua, and at Port Nelson a new shed had been erected to hold approximately 40,000 cases. The Nelson Advisory Board discussed the question of " submit " forms, and the three Government inspectors in the Nelson district are to report on suggestions for simplifying and improving the form. A suggestion that the Control Board pay out to exporters the exchange due to them met with the reply that all exchange was to be added to the pools and would not be available to growers till the pools were closed. In view of the discovery of fireblight in Canterbury,_ the Nelson Advisory Board decided to write to tho director of horti culture urging tho necessity of prohibiting any trees being sent from Canterbury j to the Nelson Province.
