THE PRICE OF BREAD.
Sir, —At this time of national emergency, can one not expect to see special measures introduced at once to cope with the terrible price of the main food supply of tho poor—bread? Much has been written about this matter, but meanwhile tho poor public pays, while the wheat-grower and flour miller enjoy the financial benefits derived from a totally ficticious and unwarrantable price for bread. Wo are forced to pay Is per 41b. loaf, whilo in England there is a public outcry against sevenpenco for tho same article. How much longer will tho public stand for this type of thing ? There should be ample opportunity in the forthcoming session of Parliament to deal with this question adequately. If —ns will probably be said—it is impossible for the Government to deal properly with this matter immediately, is it not possible for the millers and the wheat-growers, who are largely benefiting from the existing conditions, to bo taxed sufficiently to provide more money for tho No. 5 or some similar—scheme ? Family of Seven.
Sir, —Now would be tho right time to take all duty off Canadian and Australian wheat and flour and thus bread could bo obtained for littlo more than half tho present price. This would help the unfortunate ones who have only a bar.i existence under the present absurd conditions. It would bo better for the Government to help tho majority in this way rather than to keep fdling tho purses of tho already wealthy wheat farmers in tho South, who have not felt tho slump at all yet. Matakaxa.
