SUNDAY NIGHT CONCERTS.
Sir, —There will be much criticism of the recent decision of the City Council to withhold further permits from tho Musicians' Union re Sunday concerts. On all occasions these concerts have been opened with the playing of a well-known hymn, and the entire programme conducted with decorum and dignity. At this lime of acute depression, when unemployment has reached alarming proportions, and the workings of the board have broken down by sheer weight of numbers, we see tho City Council deliberately committed to a policy which must inevitably aggravate the position, and invite further calls upon public relief funds. What action does the City Council propose to take on the question of its own Sunday concerts —concerts which, incidentally, represent a direct charge upon the ratepayers ? Arthur O'Halloran.
Sir,—l would ask "5.5.," who wrote on the subject, would he like to be one of tho many employed on a Sabbath day to produce these Sunday evening entertainments, when there are six days in the week for pleasure seekers without desecrating God's day of rest? "S.S." speaks of the thousands turned into the streets to face the winter weaUior when there are places of worship open for them where they would find comfort for both body and soul and without breaking God's law to remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy. E.F.
