UNEMPLOYED WOMEN.
Sir, —I sec there is to be a meeting of unemployed women in the Town Hall on Tuesday next. With what object ? Is it to arrange some scheme to beg from the already over-harassed citizen, or is it to ask the Government to do somclhing for them ? Why not let the women do something productive ? What is wrong with being a land girl ? Let the Government grant us a piece of flat, volcanic land, such as the Chinese have, and let us get to work before spring commences to compete with the Chinese in the vegetable markets. We can very weil take a lesson from the Chinese. They have no expensive land machines. Their implements consist of hoes, rakes, spades and one old horse and cart to start with. The land they work is volcanic. lam 50 years old and I could go out at any time and dig an acre of it, so surely strong, young women could do the same. Of course, they will say, "What! Live like Chinese!" A healthy out-door life would soon give them health', beauty and self-respect. They could have their recreation in tennis, hockey and a social hall .'in which to entertain their friends during the week-ends,' etc. A lady told me that she made £lB last season growing and sending violets to the South Island, while another raises bulbs, and sends them to Australia. There are hundreds of acres in the environs of Otahuhu that would lend themselves admirably to this project. Landcirl.
