DAVIS CUP COMPETITION.

CONCLUSION OF FIRST ROUND.

NORTH SHORE'S LEAD REDUCED

The fifth series of games, concluding the first round of tho competition for the Davis Cup. was played under the control of the Auckland Hockey Association at the Western Springs Stadium and at Remuera on Saturday. The turf was in a slippery condition at both grounds, and play suffered a corresponding' extent. The results of tho senior games were as follows: — Somerville, 2, North Shore, 0. Mount Eden. 7, University. 0. St. Luke's, 5, Wesley. 0. The following table shows the po3tions of the teams in the competition:—

ACCURATE TEAM WORK. DEFEAT OF NORTH SHORE. North Shore suffered its first defeat for the 6eason at the hands of Somerville in a game which, partly as a result of the ground conditions, did not provide much sparkling hockey» Tho winning team, however, showed accurate team work and brilliant play by some individual members. Somerville, led by Sclmeideman and Watts, attacked from the bully, but A. Frater nnd Parker were ready for them. The Somervillo left wing sent down a number of attacks, but Sclmeideman tended to hold on to the ball too long. Haggett led a strong ! forward attack which had Somerville de- | fending vigorously. Butler saved from a scuffle on the line, and up and down play occupied the remaining minutes of the spoil, in which no score was miide. Reid dashed down the wing and sent in a fine centring drive which was taken by Monteitli. whose shot went astray. Somerville made its way to the twenty-five yards line, where from a roll-in. C. Watts secured the ball and went down to shoot. The ball was returned by Rankin, but Hunter gained possession and went through to score. Somerville, with added confidence, resumed the attack from the bully. C. Watts leading the van in a fast run. Rankin ran out to 6ave, but was caught in a melee. McNab seizing his opportunity and scoring Somerville's second goal. Monteith and Blake retaliated, the last-named shooting. Penman ran in to follow throiigh, but Butler made a good sava. From the bully, the Somarville forward line moved fast downfield, Hunter just missing with his shot. Time was called with the ecore:—Somerville. 2; North Shore, 0. Messrs. H. E. Watta and A. Williams were the referees. UNIVERSITY'S DEBACLE. SCIENCE OF MOUNT EDEN. Mount Eden, playing one of its most scientific games for the season./ completely over-ran University and finished tha game with a score of 7 goals to 0. Mount Eden played only one back, Logan, both Mainland and Davis being away. The opening stages of the game saw Mount Eden holding play most of the time in University's territory. A shot by Fletcher missed the opening, and from the 25yds. bully Bestic got away, passing to Bay. A neatly-executed combined rush was blocked by the Mount Eden backa Mount Eden swept the University defence back by a fast rush, but, right in the goal mouth. Brown saved the situation. Mount Eden, however, maintained the pressure nnd, after an unsuccessful shot by Fletcher, Ash scored with a shflt from a scuffle iir front of the goal. Crawley w«.s called/on to save shots in Quick succession from Horspool and M. Jones. After a period of hard attacking, Wellbourne scored Mount Eden'a second goal. _ A j moment later Fletcher found the net with j a high shot, making the score at half- ! time:—Mount Eden, 3; University, 0. | Mount Eden attacked and Crawley was ! given strenuous work to do. After saving twice, he was beaten with a shot from , Horspool. University made little headway ! and a few minutes Inter Mount Eden's fifth score wa3 made when Ellison, in attempting j to save a tihC/t from M. Jones, sent the ball I into the net. Mount Eden could not be ■ held back, and in a neat passing rush Fletcher scored. Again Mount Eden forced its way into the students' circle and Wellbourne scored Mount Eden's seventh goal. University initiated a period of attack, A. Broun jußt missing tihe goal opening with a fast shot. The final score was;— Mount Eden, 7; University, 0. Messrs. 11. E. Watts and A. William.') were the referees. CHANCES LOST AGAIN. WESLEY DOWN TO ST. LUKE'S. Once again Wesley spoilt otherwise promising play by lack of cohesion in the circle, and allowed St. Luke's to pile up five goals without scoring any in return. The game, however, was not as one-sided aB the scores indicate. St. Luke's began with a wing dash by Stuart, who sent, right across to 'Grace. A centring; shot was taken by Torbet, but the ball was over-run and A. B. Burton cleared. St. Luke's returned immediately and Grace finished off with a good shot. Voss moved down tho wing and centred to A. M. Burton, who passed on tho ball to Slaney. Sent in from a difficult angle, Slaney's shot missed. Wesley was again penned up in its circle, and from a melee Robertson seized ar.i opportunity and shot. Cooper sent the ball back, but Torbet regained possession for St. Luke's and gosled. The score at half-time was;—St. Luke's, 3; ! Wesley. 0. For the first few minutes of the second i spell St, Luke's kept up a series of fast »tI tacks. Wesley was putting in'some good defensive work, but; finally a centred shir 4 from Grace, stopped by Cooper, was tafee_ up by Brown, who goaled. Wesley made a promising attack right down the field from a saving shot by Cooper, but A. M. Burtoil's shot failed. Another promising attack, led down tho field by Hayson, was ! spoilt through over-running, and the last ' few minutes of the game were in St. Luke's | hands, Torbett and Brown each goaling, making the final score:—St. Luke's, 5; Wesley, 0. Messrs. F. Nicholson and G. Waddingham wore the referees. LOWER GRADE MATCHES. Second Grade.—University A, 4, Univer- ' sity B, 2; Wesley, 8, Somerville, lj Mount !
