TRAMWAYMEN'S WAGES.
QUESTION OF REDUCTION.
TERMS OF AGREEMENT
DECISION NOT YET REACHED
The question whether the 10 per cent, reduction in wages shall apply to employees of the Auckland Transport Board has been the subject of conferences between the men concerned and a small committee appointed by the board for the purpose. finality has not yet been reached. The board's employees comprise several sections of men, some of whom work under Arbitration Court awards and some under the terms of agreements made with tho board. The latter include the motormen and conductors, who contend that the reduction should not apply in their case. The men submit that their agreement, made as the result of discussions last August, should not be interfered with at least until its expiry in August, 1933. They contend that tho agreement was given a long term in accordance with a request by the board, and also that in accordance with the terms of .one of its clauses, it cannot be varied without a conference of the parties. The chairman of the board, Mr. J. A. C. Allum, stated yesterday that the board conferred on Saturday with representatives of two sections of its employees, and discussions with other groups would take place this week. In the meantime the wages cut was not being put into operation. NOTICE TO COALMINERS. CUT PUT INTO OPERATION. Notice has been given by the Coalmine Owners' Federation to the unions concerned that the 10 per cent, reduction in wages, in accordance with tho general order of tho Arbitration Court, will be enforced as from to-day.
