SOLDIERS RETURN CHEQUE.
'VIOLATION" OF ANZAC DAY.
COMPETITIONS NOT FAVOURED. Tho Returned Soldiers' League, of Geolong, Victoria, has returned to the committee of tho Geelong competitions a cheque for £3 3s, representing a collection taken up on Anzac Day. The league acted in the opinion that tho holding of tho competitions on Anzac Day was a violation of the spirit of the day. Soon after the cheque was returned to Mr. Galbraith, the secretary for the competitions, the representatives of three charitable organisations waited upon Mr Galbraith and asked for help. Among them was the secretary of the Geelong unemployed self-help movement, who said he was a returned soldier, and had many returned soldiers registered on his books. The competition committee agreed to make the gift to the self-help movement, feeling that the money would go into tho channel that it was intended, namely, the relief of returned soldiers. It was stated that in former years a collection taken up on Anzac Day for distressed soldiers had been accepted.
