THE WINTER MEETING.

FROCKS AT ELLERSLIE. SOMBRE COLOURS WORN. It was fortunate that tho indications of dull weather wero not fulfilled for the first day of tho Auckland Racing Club's winter meeting held at Ellerslio yesterday, and, although tho sky became ominously cloudy for a short while in the afternoon, rain did not fall. Very few racegoers, however, ventured out in light clothing, and fur coats were worn extensively. Tho colours chosen were, on tho whole, fairly sombre, and many smart models in black wero to bo seen. A distinct forecast of tho fashions for tho winter months was shown in the lightweight tweed coats and suits, frequently finished off in leather or with fur collar .and cuffs, which wero worn by a large number, whilo tho closely-fitting brynless felt hat proved yesterday that it, too, is hero to stay. Tho Governor-General, Lord Bledisloe, and tho Lady Blcdisloo wero present. Her Excellency wearing a frock of willow green crepe de chino under a cloth coat in the samo shade, with deep collar arid cuffs of white fox fur, and a green felt hat turned back off tho face.
