FINAL TRACK WORK.

MANY USEFUL GALLOPS.

GAY COCKADE SPRINTS WELL. t LUCESS IN GOOD ORDER. The No. 1 grass was available for galloping at Ellerslie yesterday and quite a lot of useful work was accomplished, many of the lute arrivals being indulged in service, able tasks. The going was heavy and the times recorded were slow. The Cornwall Handicap candidates Merry Damon (Goulsbro) and Llandudno (Ludlow) were associated in a sound gallop over seven furlongs in 1.35 2-5. There was not much between them at the finish, although Merry Damon appeared lo hold the upper hand.

Royal Survey completed a useful task with four furlongs in 57 l-ss. Royal Survey is in solid racing condition and, as ho is at home in heavy going, he should run good races in the hack events at the meeting.

Cray Cockade (Wiggins) sprinted four furlongs in 52 l-ss. He went with plenty of freedom and has come on so well in the laßt fortnight that he now seems likely to prove one of the best of tho light-weights in the Cornwall Handicap. Jiu Jazz and Senora were given a working gallop over a mile in 2.2 2-5. These jumpers are both in capital trim and it should not be. for lack of condition if they fail to race well. Hakanoa's Condition, Sir Russell was timed to run six furlongs in 1.28. and Hakanoa went seven furlongs easily in I.4fi 4-5. Hakanoa looks more forward than he was at Te Awamutu and he may race in improved fashion in tho hack hurdle events at tho meeting. Little Doubt easily defeated Bizarro over six furlomzs, tho last five being run in 1.9. Little Doubt has been taken out of the Cornwall Handicap but he will compete on the Inter days of the meeting. Sub-Editor placed six furlongs behind in 1,21 2-5. and Lord Val completed a useful task with a short sprint. Lord Val has improved in appearance lately and ho may he a possibility for a hack raco at tho meeting. Prince Lu and Lucess were companions in a working callop over seven furlongs in 1.41 l-ss, finishing together. W. J. McLean's jumpers aro both in good condition and have evidently had plenty of work to fit them for their Great Northern engagements. Nnssock *nd Snnlpiko were slightly ahead of Luminary at the conclusion of seven furlongs in 1.41 1-5. Luminary was lame after working but ho is occasionally affected this way and soon recovers. Spalpiko is showing improved condition and he will probably run in both tho Great Northerns. Perle de Leon, with a decided advantage in weight, went better than St. Wnrrigal and Foxhound over four furlongs in 50 l-ss. and Knmehnmeha ran seven furlongs in 1.43. . Distress, the liK'ter from G. A. Reid's stable, worked so'Tjly over a distance. He 'looks a likely soPc and appears lo hove done a good deal of work, Seatown and Awaken. ' Copey went steadily over a round in 2.13. Copey is a solid plodder and safe fencer and might have more than an outside chance in tho Great Northern Steeplechase. Seatown (Green) and Awaken (Wiggins) ran their first two furlongs in 27s and completed six in 3.21 3-5, a very useful effort. They were on terms at the finish and both went well, Awaken, if anything, going a shade the easier. Mister Gamp showed more dash than Nukumai over seven furlongs in 1.38 1-5, while Paris and Apache accomplished strong work ovor a distance. High Pitch and Marble King were better than Cristobel over seven furlongs in 1.38 1-5. High Pitch finished on strongly and Marble King also got through his work well. Matu finished too strongly for Pangolin and Antrim Boj( at the conclusion of a round in 2.3 2-5, which was a very satisfactory gallop for the steeplechaser. Matu is carrying a well-trained appearance and will lack nothing on tho score of condition when lie has to tackle tho Great Northern Steeplechase on Saturday. Inevitable wont pleasingly over four furlongs in 525. Inevitable's track york has been consistently, good and he will disappoint if he fails to race well in his engagements at the meeting. Loving Cup was timed to run the last six of seven furlongs in I.2P> 2-5, finishing well clear of Glen Marce, who jumped off with him. Desert Glow (McGregor) jumped a couple of hurdles carefully and afterwards did strong work: Nassone (H. Turner) was allotted a similor task and acquitted hersolf well. Nucleus (IT. Dttlieu) cleared a couple of hurdles cleanly and afterwards accomplished some strong work. Nucleus is not engaged to-day but s'»* will be a competitor in hurdle events on the second and third days.

SYDNEY TURF ITEMS.

NEW ZEALAND-BRED HORSES

CHANGE IN TOTALISATOR.

[FItOSt OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] SYDNEY, May 27,

The success of the straight-out and place totulisator at Randwick hurt caused the New South Wales Trotting Club to ask for permission to make a similar change nt Harold Park. The Australian Jockey Club would like to niter the machine at Warwick Farm, but the structural arrangements would make the change too costly at present. The same thing applies to the suburban racing clubs. The O'Kourke stable was disappointed with tw'o New Zealand-bred candidates, Auda and Dollar Princess, at Moorelield on Saturday. Auda failed to begin and was in trouble all the way. Dollar Princess (Paper Money— Piquant), after showing plenty of piifo in the first division of the Juvenile Handicap, weakened into third place. Banket and Valpre won races at Perth last Saturday nt six and seven furlongs respectively. The numerous ex-New Zealnnders in the West continue to win their share of races, and hardly a week goes by without one of them leading a field home. Cavedweller, one of Sydney's best welter horses nnd winner of £51>39 in stakes, broke down at Moorefield on Saturday. He was going well up to the time of his mishap and but for the bad luck probably would have won.

Prospects for the main jumping events at Rnndwick next month are not over bright. Rossgole, a fancied hurdles candidate, pulled up rather badly at Moorefield on Saturday when beaten by the outsider Jocoon. The bright exceptions are Grosvenor, Chatswood and Reviser, who are. working well. Chatswood was equal to beating n field over a mile on the flat at Menangle Inst. week. Reviser is a spectacular juniper, who takes riskß, but hns undoubted pace.

George Price is bringing in the Limond four-year-old Peacemaker. Price took Observatory (Wc.ithcrvnne—Desmine) to Gosford on Tuesday. Observatory was backed 1 as invincible, but failed to gain iv place. He had every chance, but ran a poor' race nnd his courage is under question, for ho had galloped really well on the track. Penlfccus, a smnrt galloper, who injured his foot in the Epsom Handicap in the spring, but subsequently won one face, has just come in after a spell. Ho in the first of the class horses to be rccommiusioned. TRAINING AT TAKANINI. VANDYKE'S FIVE FURLONGS. There were several gallops on the grass at Takanini yesterday, the going being heavy. . . , , . Taurua and Cnplnm Dollar finished together over five furlongs in 1.0. Refresher and Eaglet were on terms at the end of five furlongs smartly run ill 1 4 4-5 Both horses will strip fit to-duy. Singleton was worked over a mile and joined by White Wingß ran the last five furlongs in I.B}. Ruffles ran nway from Mashoor over six furlongs in 1.22!,. _ , , Vnndyke moved freely over five furlongs in 1.6 J. J. M. CAMERON'S SYDNEY TRIP. [from our own correspondent.] WELLINGTON. Tuesday. J. M. Cameron is to leave Sydney on his annual spring visit this month. He lias made nrrangements to take with nun the Trentham light-weight. J. Gunn, who is attached to S. J. Reid's stnble. Gunn is not an accomplished light-weight by any means, but he has ridden winners nnd with experience on the other side should improve.
