SELF-RELIANCE URGED.
WELL-BEING OF EMPIRE. GOVERNOR-GENERAL'S ADVICE. " If there is one fear which ainy of ns feels with regard to the future of the Empire, it is that we may look to Governments and other bodies to do the work which, in the old days, people were proud to do for themselves," said the GovenorGeneral, Lord Bledisloe, at the annual meeting of the St. John Ambulance Association last evening. If that process were to develop it would rob the race of its self-reliance,. resourcefulness and, above all, its self-respect, which had done so much to build up the Empire. There were three forms of help. They were Divine help, self help—which was the finest form of human help, and with which was closely associated mutual help —and public assistance. He was perfectly certain that the more they did to develop self-help and mutual help' 5 rather than public assistance, the more likely were they to hold their place among the nations of the world.
