RACING INTERESTS.

STAKES AND TAXATION. CANTERBURY CLUB'S VIEWS. The hope that when the Railway Board of Management took oHico the matter of n reduction in the cost of travelling horses by rail to and from meetings would be placed before it and that it would meet owners "and trainers in that respect was expressed by Mr. 11. A. Knight, chairman of tho committee, at the annual meeting of the Canterbury Jockey Club this week. Lower railway charges would, he was sure, make an appreciable difference in the number of horses going to meetings. In regard to the five shillings totnlisator, it was very difficult to obtain any convincing evidence that the change would be of much value at tho club's meetings Die necessary alteration of the. machine and other details would be very costly and the committee had been ur able to come to any decision on the project.

On the subject of a machine for the straight-out backing of tho first horse, the chairman said hat Mr. O. S. Watkins. president of the tacing Conference, had been much impressed with the working of the machine at Randwick. but that machine was much laipcr, and so were the facilities for using it. Again, the idea would be very costly, and the committee had not as yet 6een its way to go seriously into the matter.

Mr. George Gould said tho stakes to be given at the next Grand National meeting were almost identical with thoso in i 909 and 1910. For the small races, and also for ope.n tlat events, th ■ stakes were larger than in thoso seaso is. Against this was the fact that the costs of racing now were just about double in comparison. Racing was being strangled by taxation, ami. unless conditions improved, he did not know how some of the clubs could carry 011. The Government should len use the great number of people deriving a living from racing, apart from those who indulged in it for the eport, and it would be ;l good thing if racing and trotting authorities had a census taken of who depended upon tho two bronchos to mako their livelihood. FORM AT OPUNAKE. ROYAL FINANCE'S WIN. GOLD DAWN AS A HURDLER. [from our own correspondent.] NEW PLYMOUTH. Thursday. A slow pace in tho early stages of the Opunako Cud suited Paitonu. and, after lying in behind the field nearly nil the way, Gray brought l.im along in the straight and won with something in hand. Royal Finance registered a tine performance in winning tho Flying Handicap, as she had to go round three or four horses at tho bend, but she finished very resolutely and just got un on the post. She can handle the heavy going and should run well at Otaki. Richfield, with B. H. Morris up. was a good favourite in the Flying Handicap, but a poor get-away made hi® task a hard one. Nevertheless lie came with a good run in the. straight and was less than half a length behind the winner. The Cornwall Handicap candidate Little Doubt was a hot favourite for the last race and had to register a good per.ormance to win. lie was not well placed with lessthan a furlong to go, but then Gray got him clear and he. won by half a length. Cold Dawn (gain failed after having every chance in the Flying Handicap, and it is probable that she will be tried as a hurdler in the near future As many of Day Comet's have earned distinction as jumpers, it will be interesting to see bow she shapes. As was to be expected Mtor his recen steeplechasing essays, Copey jumped very big in the Hurdle Race, but he was running 011 at the end. CANTERBURY PARK CLUB. NEXT WEEK'S MEETING.
